Matthew Walker on the Profound Necessity of Sleep
“Sleep is not an optional, lifestyle luxury. Sleep is a non-negotiable biological necessity. It’s a life support system….And the decimation of sleep throughout industrialized nations is having a catastrophic impact on our health, our wellness, and the safety and the education of our children.” —Matthew Walker, Talk at Google
We cannot overestimate the profound importance of adequate sleep. Matthew Walker, Director of the UC Berkeley Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab, makes this statement very clear in the excellent presentation he gave at Google (see video below).
I first learned about Matthew Walker’s contributions via the excellent and informative book he wrote, Why We Need Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. Whether you watch the video, read the book, or do both, I would be surprised if you didn’t find yourself either starting, renewing, or continuing your efforts to routinely get enough sleep and to sleep well.
Thank you Dr. Matthew Walker for the work that you do.
