Feedback from workshop and program participants.

This group will likely challenge you in ways you haven’t been challenged before. It can be awful, and you may not see the challenges coming. Breathing for two minutes? No sweat, right? You’ve been breathing your whole life. But honestly that first challenge was the hardest thing I have ever done. It gets so better though—in 12 weeks you may not recognize your own reactions. I think anyone who finds themselves unfulfilled will benefit. This group makes you delve into your own expectations and fears, something you wouldn’t do on a typical afternoon.

This group, for me, was a time for self-exploration and reflection. It allowed me to spend 2 hours every week with myself. Sometimes that can be difficult, especially in times of stress, anxiety, or change, but ultimately in being guided through interactions with myself, I feel better, less stressed and anxious. I feel like I have more tools, resources, and capacity to understand myself and navigate difficult times. Also, the crafts are fun!

This is a safe space that encourages and teaches a depth of compassion. It is challenging at times, but in that challenge you have a real chance to grow. This group has helped me to become more aware of my own self-criticism, and has given me a window in which to challenge it.

I found a lot of things about this group helpful. For me personally, having a group of kind, caring, and reflective individuals was wonderful! … I also really enjoyed the diverse resources you gave us for understanding, accepting and caring for our emotions.

Participating in this group changed how I think about myself (from my failures to my successes). This group brought me in touch with my emotions, and made me less scared to make contact with them. The group was warm and encouraging. I always felt understood and valued, even when my explanations were hard to express.

This group was definitely worthwhile for me. I appreciate having such a safe space to share and grow in. Hearing others talk and sharing struggles with them was a really amazing experience — this has become such a wonderful sharing space. I really did like the crafts; it was an easier way to connect with difficult feelings. There is a warmth, a humour, and an understanding that I’ve really treasured here.

What I liked most – your method of teaching – calm and compassionate.

I found the body scan the most useful. It was very challenging at the beginning because I was trying to use the exercise to relax and defeating the purpose of just being in the moment. However, after practicing regularly, I have found that relaxation comes when I am not forcing myself to relax. By being with myself in whatever mood I am in at the moment I am practising the body scan, I am simply observing – not judging or attempting to make the situation better. This state of observation is the most relaxed state I have ever been in – neutral.
